PEELS, PEELS, PEELS

Ever since ‘The Sex and the City” episode where Miss Samantha Jones decided to party after her Chemical peel, these fantastic dermal tools have had a slightly tainted name.  But here at Miss Dermal Aesthetic we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. Never has there been such a dramatic difference to the skin with both our more gentle peels and the big boy deep sea.

Peels can be customised for an array of skin types, skin concerns and suit any downtime restrictions.  In this blog, we will breakdown some of the science behind peels and debunk the common myths. This blog will be in 2 parts so enjoy a light read and stay tuned for the second edition!

What is a chemical peel?

Chemical peels are defined as an exfoliating technique that utilises a controlled compound or mixture to accelerate cell turnover. Whether the peel itself is a liquid, gel, cream, or physical (crushed) peel, each peel is designed to penetrate and remodel the skin to improve skin abnormalities. Since the original peel was created in 1871 new ingredients, science and delivery are utilised to accelerate results and reduce risks.

Types of peels:

AHA—Alpha Hydroxy Acids are the most common and versatile peels on the market. These peels are water-soluble which means they offer fantastic benefits to skins that lack hydration. AHA are very safe peels that can be manipulated in regards to depth and exfoliation by the therapist. Some examples of AHA include: Lactic acid, Glycolic acid. Citric acid, Malic acid and Mandelic acid.

Some  benefits include:

  • Improve overall skin structure

  • Reduce superficial pigmentation,

  • Increase hydration and protection to the barrier of the skin.

  • Stimulate collagen and elastin

  • Reduce acne

  • Strengthen capillaries and blood vessels.

Who can benefit from an AHA peel?

Well if you ask us the answer would be EVERYONE. This peel is perfect for refreshing and enhancing the structure and functions of the skin with little downtime.

BHA—Beta Hydroxy Acid also known as salicylic acid is lipophilic in nature, this means in comparison to AHA which are water-soluble, these BHA work hard on the oils/waxes of the skin. It penetrates the skin through hair follicles, pores sebaceous glands and its technique is to dissolve the oils and waxes between the cells causing the skin to start exfoliating.  Salicylic acid is typically famous for its acne benefits but has done some amazing things in regards to treating redness and skin sensitivity.

Some benefits include:

  • Increased exfoliation and cell turnover

  • Reduce overall thickness in the skin which causes congestion and whiteheads.

  • Reduce oil flow

  • Reduce acne due to its ability to dissolve oils and bacteria causing plugs and blockages in the skin leading to comedones.

  • Anti-inflammatory

Who can benefit from a BHA peel?

These peels are typically more ideal for oily, congested, and thickened skin.  An amazing treatment to add in rotation with a purifying facial.

Why should we use a peel?

Well if I haven’t sold you by the individual list of benefits above, a peel is an amazing step up in any skin journey. It can really push your skin forward and enhance all the work you do as an individual. Peels may also be a stepping stone forward to our more advanced treatments like skin needling. It could be the ultimate refresher during a season change or when your skin is feeling a little dull. Peels are everything and more.

What is the downtime for peels?

Peels can have a variety of downtime depending on the individual and the peel of choice. Typically you can expect redness, an overall tight feeling, and slight warmth for 48 hours. From there you may have slight peeling or flakiness over the skin.

How do I prepare my skin for these peels?

At Miss Dermal Aesthetic we want to help you achieve your skin goals but also ensure we will reach these goals safely. This includes prepping the skin with appropriate home care and utilising our purifying facial to assess the skin during treatments. Different ingredients that we may suggest you add to your homecare routine are vitamin A at night-time or an antioxidant/pigment blocker for the day.
