Keratosis Pilaris and how to care for it

Keratosis Pilaris aka ‘chicken skin’ is something that is fairly common these days, usually seen on the backs of arms and legs. It can be distinguished as a rough like texture or small pimples, closely resembling white heads. In some cases, it also can have a pigmented appearance and shadowed in red or brown. KP happens when there is an increased protein buildup on the top of the hair follicle which creates the blockage leaving a raised bump.

Whilst for some people it may be a genetic disposition, there are other factors that can contribute to it, these include weather change or another underlying skin condition. Traditionally, exfoliation was key to reducing KP. The more you exfoliate, the less build up you get, but there is also a hydration factor that needs to be taken into consideration.

Here is our Keratosis Pilaris skincare routine:

Cleansing the arms - we recommend using Purity clean or Purastat 5 facial cleaner every second night to break down these protein bonds and aid hydration as they have a light level lactic acid component. On the days you don’t cleanse you can just use water, or a very gentle moisturizing body wash.

Our goal is not to strip or irritate the skin

Hydrating spray- Benefit balance by Cosmedix is an all-round legend on both on the face and body. With a balance of green tea, witch hazel and aloe and other calming ingredients it lightly exfoliates and calms at the same time. This can be used on the days you’re not cleansing or every day if you use just soap.

Hydration - Pigment punch body lotion is a fabulous medium weight lotion that packs hydration without leaving you greasy. It contains ingredients that will brighten and reduce the impact of discoloration. Applying 2x daily with SPF will change the way you see your KP.

Finally, internal help with hydration can also be an encouraging step. Consuming OMEGA 3 fish oils will help to produce better/healthier cells that are coming to the surface. Naturally our diet is higher in Omega 6 which can be inflammatory. Omega 3 on the other hand is anti-inflammatory and benefits many areas of the face and body.

Adding them to your daily routine is easy and can create an immense amount of positive change.

Ultimate Omega 3 Sustainable and quality fish oils $53 dollars for 60 tablets.
